About Our Foundation

6 years ago, I decided to stop turning a blind eye to the dire situation that so animals in this country face and to take action to make a difference. little did I know, a dream of mine built on nothing but pure love and compassion for animals and the strong desire to help them, would turn into the organization that it is today. Many wonder how I came up with the name, the Foundation is named after mine and my husbands 2 dogs, Sushi and Panda, with the idea in mind that every dog should be given the chance to be loved and live a life like theirs and that is what we strive to achieve every single day in their honour, to change lives, one animal at a time.  – Megan van der Waal, owner and founder.

The Sushi and Panda Foundation opened in 2017 with the main focus being on outreach programs in townships. These animals have no access to vet care or proper food and their owners are not educated on how to care for them properly.

We focus heavily on sterilization as we believe this is the root cause of the overflow of unwanted animals we are currently facing, which leads to over crowding in shelters and animals sitting in them for years with out finding a home and then leading to unnecessary euthanization. We believe if we can work on this problem, it will in turn help animals and shelters across the country.

On top of this We also focus on brining free vet care to the animals to improve their quality of life. We hold mass vaccination drives where we vaccinate, deworm and treat the animals for ticks and fleas and any other issues they have.

When we work in a community, it is a long term commitment and we are always available to the animals to provide them with medicine and any treatment they need in order to relieve suffering and pain. We never leave an animal untreated.

Another core focus of ours in on education of the owners. We like to spend one on one time with each owner and their children and take the time to properly educate them on animal care, we also inspect their property and assist them in providing adequate shelter for their animal by giving donated kennels and blankets, taking the animals off chains if needed, making sure they always have fresh water by giving them water bowls, teaching them what to feed them and how often and we also assist by giving them donated food.

About THE HAVEN

After doing our outreach programs for a while, it became clear that there was a need for us to start another division in the foundation, a re homing program. We come across so many abused, abandoned or unwanted animals during our outreach and the only option was to put them to sleep as we could not leave them there to suffer. We did not want to do this and thus the Sushi and Panda Haven was born, an entire division dedicated to taking in animals, rehabilitating them and re homing them.

We have built 2 haven’s, 1 in Touws River township and 1 in Johannesburg, where we keep any unwanted animals that come in. Our next step was to build up a network of foster families who take our animal into their homes, care for them and love them as if they were their own until they find forever homes.  We chose this model as we do not believe in keeping animals in a kennel environment for a long period of time and would rather get them into homes to adjust and heal which in turn makes them more adoptable.

We have been absolutely blown away by the response and support we have had by the public to become foster parents for our foundation.
